Temporary internet files exploding!! Help!
In content IE5 I have 8 sub folders, each with names such as 49if0da7 and Spiaw04w and Zdy365wl etc. etc. In the Log folder I have 4 sub folders with similar types of names as the Contenet IE5 folder. I have deleted ALL the files in the main temporary internet folder apart from the cookies, of which about 50 remain

IE 5.5 storing temp files and OE messages in strange locations.
The hijackthis.exe file I downloaded was the same one I had in a couple spots on my computer, temp folder included. But now, it's in c:\hjt My odd IE behavior continues. Fixing that is what I'm really after (although, obviously, having a spyware-free, nonhijacked PC is the top priority). Here's the newest logfile.

Deleting IE Cache. In cases where the temporary Internet explorer cache folder is running out of allotted space, you may be not be able to download the Office Update control. Have temp folders and files under c:\Win and also under c:\Docs & Settings\Wabash(user)\local settings. When I do a disk-clean, most files are cleaned up under the Win folder but not in Docs & Setting. Have one only, User setup(Wabash) and it's signed on. Also notice there is a Temp IE folder under Docs

FIX FOR UPGRADE INSTALLS HANGING
Is that part of the "Temporary Internet Files" folder? No, see above. There are actually a number of folders that are hidden from the users view that make up the MS, Close all instances of OE and IE Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab | Delete Files button I think I explained that I did that.

Deleting IE Temp files
There you can specify how much disk space IE = will use for the cache. As for the Windows\Temp folder, this is all garbage that can safely be = deleted as long as it is dated prior to your last boot up time. Several = set ups of Win95 do not do a very good job at removing Temp files when = they are supposed to.

Can I delete the files in the Windows Temp folder?
Well, I got the various temp files cleaned, but ... I still can't download IE6. First, I got the Delete button in Internet Options to work, Hugh was right that I just needed to wait Then I manually emptied the Temp folder and the Cookies folder leaving only index.dat in the latter. I still couldn't download IE.

Clearing temp files(Windows & IE)
The script deletes the entire folder cuz that's easy to script, and on the next logon, the OS recreates the folder as needed when you open IE. This is an undocumented hack which MS doesn't support or assure to be compatible, but it's worked for me. You could extend the logic to clear the general temp folders,

If you open the folder, you can organize the info there by clicking on any of the column headings -- and click again to reverse the order (ie a-to-z to z-to-a). I can clear the temp internet folder and no files show in explorer,but the properties of the file show as 4.18mb. Is this as it should be?

Upgrade to IE 5.5 ?
Especially if you aren't even as religious about dumping them as you are about TEMP files. After all, RB or TEMP folder... What's the difference? a while back about using a "*.bat" file to clear the temp files at boot up... when I fined it I'm sure you could manipulate it to clean the IE temp internet files,

IE History cleaner
Back in the days of DOS and Win9.x, I could reboot to MS-DOS mode and use Deltree to completely wipe the contents of Temporary Internet Files folder, Cookie folder, and History folder. IE and windows re-created all of the necessary Index.dat, Content.IE5, etc. files fresh on the re-boot. This is how you cleaned up

Temp Folders????
Since you had chosen to manually put the installation files into the c:\temp folder, then you should have also manually removed the IE4 setup files yourself. This directory became full of different files so I said, instead of looking for the IE files that have been splattered in this directory,

IE folders duplicated in Windows_Temp
IE decides by some algorithm which of these folders gets which files. The directory you see in each folder is actually a single directory that contains codes pointing to one of the 4 But which folder should I leave on? Oh, the Temp folder itself also has the same list of files. So I have 5 identical folders!

Computer Bugs
I really am curious about why my temp internet files don't appear to be where IE claims they are, and why I still have month-old images in the temp\temporary internet files\content.ie5\blahblahblah folders (even after allegedly clearing cache). I clearly don't understand something about how IE6 caches stuff.

Outlook express is very slow opening
Go to IE Tools, Internet Options, Temporary Internet Files {Settings Button}, View Objects, Downloaded Programme Files. Check for unusual objects there. Go to IE Tools, Internet Options, Accessibility. Make sure there is no style sheet chosen (under User Style Sheet - format documents using my style sheet).

Duplicate IE files in Windows temp folder
Ken, What happens when the Temporary Internet Files folder reaches the maximum storage limit? Do the older files get deleted automatically? Second, what is the best preference setting for checking the folder (vs. web site) for newer version? Every time, Never, or when Internet Explorer starts up?
